About Me

I was born into a family of quilters.  My mother was a quilter. My grandmothers and great grandmothers from both my parents were quilters.  I honor my mother for encouraging me to learn and do more quilting than house cleaning.  Growing up she often told me I didn’t have to do dishes but that I could go and sew.  At the time I made garments and she would do quilts in the winter when I was at school.

One summer when I was fifteen, I cut out quilt pieces for Dresden blocks.  The fabrics were new but they were the left-overs from garment making.  I used cardboard for templates as the grandmothers had done.  The pieces didn’t fit and the quilt was forgotten.  My mother kept the box of pieces for many years.  She must have realized I would never finish that quilt.  What a surprise when she gave me the gift of the completed quilt.  And she had hand quilted it too!  I am so fortunate I have the quilt of those blocks.

I appreciate the quilting legacy.  I am very interested not only in doing the art of quilting but the history of quilts.

I grew up near Echo MN and was a member of Rock Valle Lutheran Church where they have a Mission Day each June on the third Wednesday.  In 2011 they will have the 124th one.  At the auction they have about a dozen quilts each year.  The ladies have quilting bees and hand stitch many of the quilts.  I have been told by several of them how much they miss my mother as she was a very good quilter and so fast at it.

The world of quilting has changed with the use of the rotary cutter, rulers and all the equipment available to us today.  I have learned on my own as well as taken many classes and workshops to explore the whole world of quilting.  I delight in all the colors and fabrics available to us at so many quilt shops.  I only buy quality fabric from quilt shops.

Each year I attend many quilt shows.  I am always inspired to come home to my quilting room to create something new.  I belong to American Quilting Society, MN Quilters Inc, Piecemakers Quilting Guild, Wild River Quilting Guild, Material Girls Quilting Guild and WI Northwest Heritage Passage.  Links to several of these organizations are on the Links page.
